BMW X5 (00 - 06)
This is a huge favourite with Irish people. It has become a byword for large sports utility vehicles. However, BMW insist this is not an SUV but an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). You’re instantly confident sat behind the wheel thanks to the high driving position which gives great visibility. On the road, it handles really well, the steering feels sharp and clear and it’s surprisingly sprightly around town. When taken off-road, the powerful, torquey engines, and excellent grip allow you to tackle some really harsh terrain; the suspension is impressive. There’s a good spread of powerful, efficient engines especially the diesels which score high on pulling power.
Look out for
• Tyres, brakes and steering bushescan wear easily in hard driven 4x4s
